About BGH
Energy, integrity and a commitment to expertise are the words that best describe Barbara’s approach to the practice of law. For the first thirty years of her career she brought this approach to her role as partner in what was historically a leading labour and employment law firm. Her approach to practice has earned her recognition from the legal and employer community as a leading human rights and employment lawyer. Lexpert, the business magazine for lawyers has named her one of the top 25 women lawyers in Canada.
Underlying Barbara’s approach to the advice and representation she provides to employers is a recognition that creating and maintaining a positive workplace environment is in the long term interest of employers. In the very competitive world in which Canadian employers now operate the quality of the human resources which employers are able to attract and retain represent a competitive advantage. A quality workplace environment is key to attracting and retaining quality employees. Because of her recognition of this reality Barbara approaches the problems and challenges faced by her clients as business problems which require solutions which respect and respond to business needs. She uses her legal expertise, knowledge and experience based judgement to develop legally sound business solutions, not just legal responses, to her clients’ workplace challenges.
As of January 1, 2010 Barbara Humphrey has her own practice, Barbara G. Humphrey Professional Corporation. This new structure allows Barbara to continue her focus on assisting employers with workplace human rights and employment law issues. In addition to the historical challenges faced by employers Barbara is conscious of the need to provide solutions to the new challenges being faced by employers including:
- The new Human Rights Tribunal compliance regime
- New employer obligations for Violence Prevention
- New employer obligations for Harassment Prevention initiatives
